RojavaNet

Resilient Communication Network for Rojava

"The most critical function of modern technology must be to keep the doors of the revolution open forever!" – M. Bookchin

Let's provide Rojava with decentralized, autonomous, privacy-enabled network infrastructure, and ensure the most successful liberatory project of our lifetime stays connected.

Problem

Technology must serve the people, not oppressors

Internet shutdowns can isolate communities during conflict by disrupting communication, coordination, and access to information.

Rojava remains dependent on a limited number of internet providers, fiber routes, and exchange points, making connectivity vulnerable to disruption. Existing alternatives remain at risk and may not be accessible to civilians during a crisis.

We seek funding to establish a decentralized, censorship-resistant communication network that remains operational when conventional internet access becomes unavailable.

Solution

RojavaNet

The project builds on existing WiFi infrastructure to create a resilient local network capable of operating independently of external internet providers.

The network can continue functioning during internet shutdowns through a combination of local services, self-hosted infrastructure, VPN-protected connectivity, and a limited number of Starlink gateways. Existing antennas and routers can largely be reused, minimizing deployment costs.

The system can be accessed without requiring centralized identifiers or telecommunications providers, enabling communication even when conventional infrastructure is unavailable.

Who are we looking for

Call for involvement

We can deploy a team of five people to assist with installation, configuration, and training. Local authorities have agreed to support implementation and facilitate deployment.

Funding

Any contributions will support the purchase of essential technical equipment, implementation, initial maintenance, education, technical support, travel and logistics costs.

Remote tech support

If you have experience with intranet setup and administration and would like to support this project through remote consultation, please contact us using the information below.

Engineers

If you have expertise in building large-scale wireless networks, system or LAN administration, or similar work, and would like to support this project on-site, reach out to us.

Who We Are

On-site presence, years of experience

We are a team combining local experience with expertise in communications infrastructure, operational security, and privacy technologies.

Our work includes medical and humanitarian support in the region since 2019, VPN access and security training, media and advocacy initiatives, and the deployment of communications infrastructure, including Starlink connectivity.

Our goal is to ensure that communities retain the ability to communicate, coordinate, and share information when centralized infrastructure fails.

How we want to do this

Roadmap

Our plan consists of three layers that, once deployed, will provide a solid communication backbone critical to any self-organized movement's survival. We want to address both communication inside Rojava and uplinks to the rest of the world.

Phase 1

The local fallback

Fully local intranet with a self-hosted SimpleX chat application, connecting hospitals and universities.

Phase 2

Federated internet uplink backup

Deployment of satellite internet connection for involved neighborhoods and communities.

Phase 3

Privacy by default

Install Nym entry gateways for all outbound connections to protect the privacy of all connected users.
